Birth affecting B12 levels

Postby clairec1979 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:53 am

Following on from something on one of the other sections, just wondered if those of you who have given birth and since developed low B12 levels lost a lot of blood.

I have 3 children first 2 had no problems with the 3rd (now 5) I did technically have a PPH but it wasn't a huge amount in terms of haemorrage (I had him at home and didn't need to be transferred in, but scared the midwife silly), diagnosed with a problem 4 years later, but seeking help for a year before and probably had symptoms since the birth in retrospect, but you put a lot of tiredness down to having 3 kids under 3

I had a terrible birth with my first. I had pre-eclampsia while pregnant, early labour that was stopped and then 5 weeks later a 49 hour labour trying to get out a posterior 9 lb'er out. Was close to third degree tear but normal bleeding. The 2nd and 3rd were c-sections by choice. I don't care what anyone says, smart women never forget that kind of pain

Interested to see this topic on the forum. I had a major bleed at 30 weeks when I was pregnant with my daughter (second pregnancy, she is now six), and a number of smaller ones after that. No-one sure why as placenta seemed healthy at birth.

I had no idea I had PA, but looking back I think my symptoms started after I had my son (he is now eight). I had my first jab nearly a year ago. My daughter was diagnosed with hypothyroidism back in February. :(

I had a low placenta (placenta praevia type 3) which meant I had to have a c section. Apparently I lost 600ml of blood. Not sure if this counts as a haemorage or not but I do know that every midwife would comment on it.

Well interesting as this is it maybe not the blood loss at all, did all of you have gas and air??? I had two canisters of it during my last labour 4 yrs ago followed by c-section and then put all the tiredness down to older mum new baby, 2yrs after diagnosed with low B12, was it the gas and air that triggered it off??

Prolonged exposure to entonox can lower B12 levels

As I'm not familiar with that word, Entenox, I looked it up and find it's "gas & air" used during labor. It contains nitrous oxide, which depletes B12. In a person with PA or who has b12 deficiency already this is very serious, needs to be treated with B12. In 'normal' people, they can recover in a normal way via food. For people undiagnosed yet, it would be best to have b12 levels checked prior to any Nitrous exposure and after.
